In a word, no. But it can be done to a hell of a lot more engines today than ever before. In theory, it can be done to any petrol engine — normally aspirated, supercharged, or turbocharged — anything that has an ECU with which the fuel and ignition settings can be heavily modified, which these days means most of them.
So, providing you can find a tuner capable of adjusting your ECU to suit, the vast majority of engines can have this applied to some extent at least. This is done purely for the noises. As it works in a similar manor to rally anti-lag systems, really extreme set-ups could, in theory, work like a mild anti-lag system on a turbocharged engine, helping keep your turbo up to speed.

Believe who you want but I know who my money is on. Good thing I ordered catless. I thought I saw 1 or 2 videos of people with crackle tunes and only muffler deletes. Wasn't insanely loud but still a head turner. I just wanna be sure that a muffler delete is enough because I don't want to go with the delete and then go DP for more. Might be TOO loud. Basically that happens with low back-pressure exhausts and tuning that essentially retards timing and throws a bit of fuel on overrun.
So it may do it a bit with a Catless turbo-back exhaust, but getting a tune for that would be much easier. Location Orange County.

I was really surprised it had a really good deep sound and pop every time I left off the gas. But weird thing is after k miles it lost the pop letting off the gas.
Not sure how or why. So from my experience you can get really good sound without a down pipe. Just a cat back. That I am not sure of since I don't have a cat back yet. Location Charlotte, NC. I would say Brakes, for the mk6 especially. The rubber bushings wear out fairly rapidly in my part of the country, from road salt in winter to high temps in summer. Good info! I stress the importance of maintenance to all of my customers!
